Reflection on Thanksgiving 2024

The Collect for Thanksgiving:
Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Thanksgiving is a time for reflection, gratitude, and connection. It’s an opportunity to pause and appreciate the blessings in our lives, whether they are big or small. The holiday encourages us to gather with loved ones, share meals, and create lasting memories. As you reflect on Thanksgiving, consider what you are thankful for this year. Think about the people who have made a positive impact on your life, the experiences that have brought you joy, and the lessons you’ve learned. It’s also a time to extend kindness and generosity to others, whether through acts of service or simply expressing appreciation.
Historically, Thanksgiving is rooted in the early settlers’ gratitude for a successful harvest and the assistance they received from Indigenous peoples. While it’s important to acknowledge the complex history behind the holiday, the spirit of Thanksgiving focuses on gratitude and community.
Thanksgiving is about quiet reflection, gratitude, and the humanity we demonstrate to others, On a Thursday Americans reach out to and provide for those who may have little to be thankful for. Then, on the Friday after we trample one another to get the newest piece of technology or the latest craze in toys. The irony of human behavior is always enlightening, and sometimes disheartening. What is more important is the gift of yourself, time spent with those who are close and share your life. Not the presents you give but what you give of yourself to help others. You will discover the more thoughtful you are of others the more meaningful, rewarding and fulfilling your life will be.
Thanksgiving is also a time when we can take the time to prepare for the coming season of Advent. Thanksgiving is a time of graditude and Advent is a time of reflection and a time for preparedness, time to ready our hearts for the coming of our Lord and Savior.
Let us Pray:
Heavenly Father, we come before you with hearts full of gratitude. Thank you for the blessings you have bestowed upon us—our family, friends, health, and the abundance we enjoy. May we always remember to give thanks for your goodness and grace. Lord, as we gather together, we ask for your blessings upon our meal and our time together. May your presence fill our homes with joy and peace. Help us to appreciate the simple pleasures and the love that surrounds us. This we pray in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen
